Laundry pickup app

An on-demand laundry pickup and delivery app for Chicago apartment renters, with rideshare drivers doing the pickups.

Launchifier is a guided path: five stages, 45 tasks, and a go/no-go gate at the end of each stage. Below is every task this founder was given, what they did, and what the guide decided.

The idea, as the founder entered it

“I drive for a rideshare app in Chicago, and I see how many people in apartments without laundry haul bags down the block. I want an app where you tap a button, a driver picks up your laundry, and it comes back folded the next day. Drivers like me could earn on slow afternoons. My app would just be easier to use than what's out there. I have about $1,000.”

What the founder did: talked to 10 renters in Logan Square and Uptown buildings with no in-unit laundry. 6 had already tried a pickup service, and 4 still used one. Then $40 went on flyers for a test pickup at $1.75 a pound: 3 people called, and 2 of them asked why it cost more than the service they already used.

What the guide flagged: the founder counted the competitors: Poplin, Rinse, Hampr and at least two local laundromats already pick up and deliver in the same neighborhoods, several of them funded. Their prices are similar or lower, and they already have the folding, the drivers and the insurance. The only difference the founder could name was a cleaner app.

Why No-go: four or more services already pick up laundry in these exact neighborhoods, some with venture funding, and the founder's only difference was a cleaner app. People switch laundry services for price or reliability, not screens, and the flyer test showed the founder couldn't beat them on price. Competing here means outspending funded companies with $1,000.

What this run got right

The founder ran a real test for $40 and listened to what came back: two of the three callers already had a cheaper option. Counting the competitors by name, instead of assuming they were weak, turned a hunch into a clear answer in two weeks.

What we’d watch

The founder's real asset is knowing the city's drivers and their slow afternoons. Laundry services in this market need reliable drivers; driving for one of them, or building something drivers themselves need, starts from that strength. Otherwise, $960 still in the bank is a good result.
